My baby is more than one month old and still has jaundice. What's going on?

Everything was normal after the baby was born, but one month later, the baby's face began to turn yellow. So why is the baby still jaundiced after more than one month? What should I do if the baby has jaundice? How to care for the baby with jaundice? The following editor will give you a detailed introduction.

Why is the baby still jaundiced after more than one month?

Experts say that breastfeeding will prolong the duration of jaundice, but there is no need to stop breastfeeding. You can give your baby some water to help the jaundice be metabolized out of the body, and it will completely disappear within two months. Pay attention to the recurrence of jaundice. If it gets worse, take your baby to the hospital for examination in time.

What to do if your baby has jaundice

Phototherapy: It is a safe and effective method that can be given for 24-48 hours and repeated if necessary. Note that the baby should be naked during phototherapy, but care should be taken to protect the baby's eyes and genitals.
Hormone therapy: Hormone therapy can increase the activity of liver enzymes, promote the combination of glucuronic acid and bilirubin, and prevent antigen-antibody reaction. Hydrocortisone or dexamethasone can be injected intravenously or taken orally.
Transfusion of plasma or albumin: Plasma protein can bind to indirect bilirubin (1g albumin can bind to 15mg bilirubin), thereby reducing the binding of indirect bilirubin to brain cells, thus reducing the incidence of kernicterus.
Phenobarbital, as an enzyme inducer, can activate glucuronyl transferase and accelerate the glucuronidation of indirect bilirubin. The dose is 5 mg/kg body weight/day, orally.
Treatment with traditional Chinese medicine: Oral administration of Junchenhuang (Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron chinense, Phellodendron amurense, Gardenia jasminoides, Junchen, and Rhubarb) or Junchenhao decoction.

How to care for baby jaundice

Drink boiled water: Parents can feed the baby boiled water every morning and evening, so that the baby can urinate and expel jaundice from the body. If the baby drinks formula milk, water should be added between meals.
Drink glucose: When parents find that the neonatal jaundice index is very high, they can give the baby some glucose water. Just add glucose to the water and feed it to the baby.
Sunbathing: At around 10 o'clock every morning, when the sun is not very strong, you can let your baby bask in the sun. Try to expose the baby's skin as much as possible, but protect the baby's eyes from the sun. In addition, you must also pay attention to keeping the baby warm and not let the wind catch a cold due to sunbathing.
Stop breastfeeding: If the above methods do not work, you can try to stop breastfeeding for 2-3 days, because the cause of jaundice may be breast milk, so after stopping breastfeeding, the jaundice index will decrease. When the jaundice symptoms are mild, you can continue to breastfeed. When the symptoms are severe, you should stop breastfeeding and switch to other formula milk. When the baby's jaundice subsides, you can continue to breastfeed.
