How to prevent newborns from choking on milk and how to give first aid to avoid suffocation

Babies need to eat enough milk to grow. Mothers should feed their babies regularly and quantitatively, and pay attention to the possibility of choking. So what are the reasons for babies choking? How to prevent babies from choking? How to first aid for choking? The following editor will introduce you in detail.

Reasons for baby choking on milk

Incorrect feeding method

Many babies choke on milk because of the wrong feeding method of their mothers. If the baby is fed with formula milk and the opening of the bottle is too large, the baby will suck too much milk into his mouth and suck too quickly, which can easily cause the baby to choke on milk. In addition, if the mother's posture is wrong when feeding, it will also cause the baby to choke on milk. When feeding, mothers are best to choose a sitting position, not to let the baby lie flat on their legs, and the baby's head must be higher than the lower body. At the same time, when feeding, mothers are best to choose a quiet place to avoid disturbing the baby's feeding.

Your baby is having trouble breathing

If the baby has difficulty breathing, it is easy to cause choking. Therefore, mothers should pay attention to observe the baby. If the baby has cold or cough symptoms, they must take appropriate measures to prevent the baby from choking due to breathing problems. Secondly, parents like to choose to sleep with their babies and place the baby in the middle of the bed. At this time, if mothers feed the baby, they must pay attention to air circulation and prevent the quilt from pressing the baby, so that the baby cannot inhale oxygen and choke or stop breathing.

The baby is ill

If babies are weak or have respiratory diseases, they may easily choke on milk.

Vitamin A deficiency in babies

If the epithelial cells in the front part of the baby's larynx atrophy, it can easily cause the baby to choke on milk, so mothers should pay attention to supplementing their babies with vitamin A.

How to prevent baby from choking on milk

Feed at the right time: do not feed the baby when he is crying or laughing; do not wait until the baby is very hungry to feed, as the baby may choke if eating too fast; do not force the baby to feed after he is full, as forced feeding may cause accidents.
Correct posture: Breastfed babies should lie diagonally in the mother's arms (upper body at 30-45 degrees), and should not lie on the bed to feed. Artificially fed babies should not lie flat when feeding, but should be in a sloped position with the bottom of the bottle higher than the nipple to prevent air inhalation.
Control the speed: When the mother secretes milk too quickly and the amount of milk is too much, use your fingers to gently press the areola to slow down the flow of milk. The hole of the artificial feeding nipple should not be too large, and the milk should flow out in drops instead of lines when it is turned upside down.
Pay attention to observation: The mother's breast should not block the baby's nostrils. The mother must observe the baby's facial expression while feeding. If milk overflows from the corners of the baby's mouth or the area around the mouth and nose turns blue, the mother should stop feeding immediately.
Expel gas from the stomach: After feeding, hold the baby upright on your shoulders and pat the baby's back to help expel gas from the stomach. It is best to hear the baby burp before putting the baby on the bed. The head of the bed should be 15 degrees high. The baby should lie on the right side for 30 minutes before lying flat. Do not let the baby sleep on his stomach to avoid sudden infant death.

How to first aid for choking and suffocation

If the baby vomits after a full stomach and suffocates, the baby should be laid flat with his face turned to one side or on his side to prevent vomited milk from flowing into the throat and trachea. If the baby swallows milk too quickly at the beginning of feeding and chokes on milk (empty stomach), the baby should be laid prone on the rescuer's legs with the upper body leaning forward 45-60 degrees to help the milk in the trachea to be emptied and drained out.
If the mother has an automatic breast pump, turn it on immediately and use only the hose to insert into the baby's mouth and pharynx to suck out the spilled milk and vomit. If there is no suction device, the mother can wrap gauze around her fingers and insert it into the baby's mouth until the pharynx to suck out the spilled milk to prevent the baby from inhaling the spitted milk into the trachea again when inhaling.
Pat your child's back hard or pinch the soles of his feet to make him cry or cough in pain. This will help cough out the milk in the trachea and ease breathing.
Place both hands on the upper abdomen of the child and squeeze upwards to increase the abdominal pressure. With the impact force of the diaphragm rising and the chest cavity shrinking, some of the choked milk will be ejected from the airway. When your hands relax, the child can re-inhale some of the oxygen. Repeat this process to relieve suffocation.
At the same time, call 120 for help, or prepare to rush to the hospital for emergency treatment.
