How do uterine fibroids form? Are they serious?

If your lower abdomen becomes larger for no reason and you have excessive menstrual bleeding, beware of uterine fibroids. Women who did not go to the hospital for a checkup during pregnancy or are preparing for pregnancy should be careful. It is important to get a checkup for your own health and the health of your baby.

Uterine fibroids are as big as balls!

The surgical removal weighed 6 kg

So, at the suggestion of a friend, Ms. Hu went to see a gynecologist. Unexpectedly, during the ultrasound examination, she found that the uterine fibroids were much larger than three years ago, even exceeding 30X20 cm in size.

After discussion, Ms. Hu decided to choose a traditional subtotal hysterectomy. The wound size was about 10 cm. The weight of the hysterectomy reached 6,000 grams, which was a benign fibroid. After 4 days of hospitalization, she was discharged without any discomfort. This case is the largest case of fibroid removal in the history of Heping Women and Children's Hospital.

High incidence of uterine fibroids

Don’t take excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, and unexplained constipation lightly!

Physicians say that uterine fibroids are the most common type of gynecological tumor. According to clinical statistics, about 20% of women of childbearing age have uterine fibroids, and among women over 40, as many as 40 to 50% have asymptomatic uterine fibroids. Although these women have uterine fibroids, they do not have symptoms such as excessive menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain, or frequent urination, so they will not go to see a doctor. They often discover the presence of uterine fibroids during routine health checks.

Less than 50% of uterine fibroids will have symptoms. The most common reason for surgery is excessive menstrual bleeding. Other possible symptoms include abnormal uterine bleeding, excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, pressure and pain, and other discomfort reactions. Severe cases may even cause fibroid vascular embolism, fibroid degeneration, or fibroid prolapse from the cervix causing acute pain and other symptoms.

In addition, if uterine fibroids grow too fast, they will also have other effects on the body's physiological functions. Generally speaking, when the fibroids compress the bladder, it may cause frequent urination; if it compresses the rectum, it is easy to have long-term constipation problems; once the fibroids grow to a certain size, there is even a concern that it may cause partial obstruction of the ureter, so be especially careful!

Should uterine fibroids be removed?

Doctor: If it is as big as a fist, it is recommended to remove it

Doctors recommend that if you find yourself having the above problems, and accompanied by symptoms such as unexplained swelling in the lower abdomen, you should seek help from a professional obstetrician and gynecologist as soon as possible to clarify whether it is a uterine fibroid that is causing the problem! As for the treatment method, it depends on the size of the fibroid, the location of the growth, the patient's symptoms and condition (age, pregnancy status, whether you still want to be pregnant, physical health). If the fibroid has no clinical symptoms, you may not need any treatment for the time being, and you only need to continue to follow up at the outpatient clinic every 4 to 6 months. If the size of the fibroid is larger than the size of an adult's fist, it is recommended to undergo surgical treatment and removal, which is more secure.
