What is the cause of postpartum bleeding during sexual intercourse? What should I do if I have postpartum bleeding during sexual intercourse?

During pregnancy, women and their spouses will not have sex for a long time because they are concerned about the baby. Once the baby is born, they will start to revisit their world of two people. However, it is not uncommon for postpartum bleeding to occur due to improper sex. What is postpartum bleeding?

What is postpartum bleeding?

Having sex too early

The wound of the perineal incision usually takes 7 days to heal and the sutures are removed. At this time, the surface tissue of the perineum has healed, but the deep muscle layer and fascia need 6-8 weeks to repair. If you start having sex too early after delivery, it may cause the wound to split and bleed.

Too intense action

Because the husband has to abstain from sex for a long time during his wife's late pregnancy and postpartum recovery period, once they resume their sexual life, the movements may be too intense, which can easily cause damage, bleeding or rupture of the perineal tissue.

Poor maternal recovery

If a woman's body does not recover well after childbirth, suffers from anemia, malnutrition, or inflammation of the vagina and perineum, the healing of the perineum wound may be delayed, and bleeding may easily occur during sexual intercourse.

Inflammation of the external genital tract

If a postpartum woman has inflammation in her reproductive tract, she may also bleed during intercourse. There are several types of bleeding:

Cervical polyps

The cervix may be stimulated by chronic inflammation for a long time, which may cause cervical polyps. Single or multiple small pedunculated granulation tissues grow at the cervical opening. The polyps are tender and bleed when touched, so there may be bleeding during sexual intercourse. This bleeding is usually bright red.

Cervicitis

90% of married women suffer from cervicitis. Cervicitis is divided into three types according to the degree of cervical erosion: mild, moderate and severe. For those with moderate or severe cervical erosion, the male's genitals rub against the cervix during sexual intercourse, which can cause injury and bleeding.

Precautions

Generally speaking from a medical point of view, normal sexual life should be resumed six weeks after delivery. Of course, new mothers can first feel their own physical condition and touch the degree of recovery of the wound before making a decision.

For example, check whether the wound on the abdomen has healed and whether the lochia has been discharged. Six weeks after giving birth, the new mother should go to the hospital for the first comprehensive physical examination after delivery, especially the perineum.
