What should I do if my baby falls on the back of his head? Emergency measures for babies who fall on the back of their heads

It is easy for babies to fall when they are learning to walk or playing. If the back of their head hits the ground, it may affect the baby's intelligence and physical health if it is not handled correctly in time. So, what should you do if your baby falls on the back of his head?

Don't rub your head with your hands

When a baby falls on the back of his head, the first reaction of parents is to rub the affected area vigorously, hoping to reduce the swelling. In fact, this is the wrong way to deal with it. It is best not to rub or massage the head hard. The more you rub, the more likely it is to swell, aggravate the swelling and subcutaneous bleeding, and only make the child more painful. The best way is to use ice cubes to cool down the swelling quickly.

If there is a head injury, stop the bleeding first

If there is a slight skin break with bleeding and a lump, first rinse off the dirt and foreign matter with clean water or carefully clean the wound with a cotton swab, then apply a sterile Band-Aid and apply cold compress after the bleeding stops.

If a large wound occurs, you can use sterile gauze, a clean diaper, a towel or your fingers to press the wound firmly to prevent bleeding. If the situation is serious, you need to keep pressing until the ambulance arrives or rush to the hospital emergency room.

Early cold analgesia

The baby has a bump on the back of his head. After the injury, local cold compress should be applied as soon as possible to facilitate vasoconstriction, reduce subcutaneous bleeding, reduce the stimulation and compression of metabolic products on nerve endings, and play a role in reducing swelling and relieving pain. Ice compress can be applied for fifteen minutes every two hours until the swelling stops increasing. You can use an ice pack or a towel wrapped in ice cubes to apply ice to the painful area. If there is no ice cube, you can also soak a towel in cold water and apply it to the painful area.

24-hour application of medicinal wine for traumatic injuries

24 hours after the baby is injured, you can apply herbal wine and safflower oil under the guidance of a doctor to help promote the absorption of the hematoma and make the swelling go away. Generally, smaller hematomas can be absorbed and healed after a few days. If you feel that the injury is serious, you should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

It should be noted that when a large lump appears after a fall, do not immediately apply or massage it with medicinal wine for traumatic injuries, as this will cause more severe bleeding.

Observe your baby's reaction

After the baby falls, try to talk to him and tease him to divert his excitement. Observe him for two days. If he is in good spirits and has a normal appetite within two days, you can be completely relieved. If you find that he has increasingly obvious headaches, nausea, vomiting, irritability or gradually loses consciousness, you should be alert to intracranial hematoma, concussion or brain contusion and send him to the hospital for further diagnosis and treatment in time.

Situations requiring medical attention

If your baby falls on his head, you should go to the hospital immediately if:

1) Bleeding trauma on the head;

2) The baby did not cry after falling, but was not fully conscious, semi-comatose and sleepy;

3) Within two days after the fall, the child has repeated vomiting, excessive sleepiness, poor spirits, or severe crying;

4) Within two days after the fall, there is bleeding, water discharge from the nose or ears, or uneven pupils. Generally, if a fall on the head causes a severe concussion or intracranial hemorrhage, it will occur quickly, at the latest within 24 hours, so go to the hospital as soon as possible if you have symptoms.
