We often see that newborn babies have a lot of dandruff on their heads. Is this common for all babies? Should we clean it off? How should we clean it?

How does baby dandruff occur?

Newborns have many sebaceous glands, which are very functional and can secrete a large amount of sebum. The parts with abundant sebaceous glands are the scalp, forehead, hairline, behind the ears, neck, back, perineum and skin folds of the body. Especially when newborns get more androgens from the mother, the sebaceous glands secrete vigorously in a short period of time, which increases the sebum secretion. At the beginning, many small red rashes the size of rice grains can be seen on the skin or scalp, which will later form yellow-red patches. If dust is stained, a thick layer of yellow scabs may form, which may turn black over time.

Dandruff must be dealt with promptly

Dander can have adverse effects on the baby's health, so it is very necessary to treat the baby's dander. Because dander contains a lot of dirt, once the baby's scalp is scratched or abraded, it will not only affect the treatment of head trauma, but also easily lead to infection. In addition, dander covering the fontanelle will limit the buffering function of the baby's fontanelle. Dander blocks the fontanelle, making it difficult for parents and doctors to judge the baby's health by observing the condition of the fontanelle, so that doctors cannot detect important symptoms such as dehydration (sunken fontanelle) and increased intracranial pressure (full and bulging fontanelle) in time, thus affecting diagnosis and treatment.

Babies with dandruff are mostly exudative, and they can heal themselves after 3 to 4 weeks of proper care. For treatment, you can soak the scab in sterilized vegetable oil or liquid paraffin until it softens, then gently wipe it off with a cotton swab or a clean towel.

How to properly remove baby's dandruff

Correct head cleaning + professional baby descalp oil

1. Remember not to use your fingernails to scratch your baby's hair, as this may easily hurt your baby's delicate scalp. Before washing your baby's hair, use a small comb to straighten the hair to prevent it from getting tangled. When washing, plug your baby's ears with cotton to prevent water from entering the ear canal.

2. When washing your baby's hair, the water temperature should be controlled at around 37℃~38℃. This is because if the water is too cold, it is not easy to remove the "scald", and if the water is too hot, it is easy to burn the baby's skin. Therefore, when washing your baby's hair, it is best for the mother to test the water temperature herself. The water temperature in winter can be slightly higher than that in summer by 3℃~5℃.

3. After washing your hair, apply an appropriate amount of professional baby dandruff removing oil to accelerate the removal of baby's dandruff and repair and moisturize your baby's scalp.

Precautions

① If the baby's dandruff is thick and difficult to clean, you can let the dandruff soften for a while before cleaning it, or repeat the above steps several times.

②If your baby suffers from seborrheic dermatitis, apply vitamin B6 ointment to the affected area after washing his hair, or clean it according to the doctor's advice.

③The baby’s scalp is delicate, so be careful when using a hair dryer after washing his hair.
