Why is it that one eye is bigger than the other? Be alert to these four possibilities

Eyes are the most important organ in the human body, and we need to pay more attention to them. So, what is the reason for a baby's eyes to be larger than one?

Why is my baby's eye bigger than the other?

1. It is a neonatal phenomenon

It is very normal for a newborn to have one eye larger than the other. Human eyes are naturally different in size. It is just that because the child is still young and has not fully developed, the size of the eye is more obvious. Generally, as the child grows, the eyes will slowly return to normal, and the size of the eye will not be so obvious.

It is recommended to observe carefully after the baby is three months old to see if there is any sign of protruding eyes of different sizes. If they are not protruding, it is normal. If they are protruding, you should see a doctor in time.

2. It may be genetic

If there is a clear problem of uneven eyes in the baby's family, then the uneven eyes of the baby should be a hereditary phenomenon. Normal children usually have one eye larger than the other, but the size of the eyes may be significantly different or slightly different, which is all due to heredity.

3. Eye disease

If the child has grown up and one eye is still obviously larger than the other, then you have to consider whether one of the child's eyes is developing out of sync due to external stimulation, or whether it is caused by an eye disease. It is recommended that parents take their children to the hospital for an eye examination to rule out the possibility of amblyopia or myopia. If it is an eye disease, professional treatment should be carried out and the eyes should be well protected at ordinary times.

4. It may be ptosis

The baby's subcutaneous fat is thicker and the epidermis is loose. If the skin of one eyelid sags, one eye may appear smaller. This may gradually disappear as the baby grows older and the skin becomes more tense. However, there are also congenital eyelid ptosis diseases, most of which are caused by incomplete development or defect of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, or by defect of the nerve that innervates the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. It is a congenital developmental malformation, mostly bilateral, sometimes unilateral, and can be autosomal dominant or recessive.

Treatment of ptosis is mainly to prevent vision loss and improve appearance, and treatment should be targeted at the cause. If congenital ptosis affects vision development, surgery should be performed early. If it is mild ptosis that does not affect vision development, surgery can be performed at a later date to improve appearance. Patients with unilateral ptosis that blocks the pupil should strive for early surgery, preferably before the age of 6, to prevent amblyopia.

What should children eat to improve their eyesight?

1. Foods rich in vitamin A. Vitamin A is closely related to normal vision. If vitamin A is insufficient, the regeneration of rhodopsin is slow and incomplete, and the dark adaptation time is prolonged, which can cause night blindness in severe cases. If vitamin A continues to be deficient or insufficient in the diet, dry eye disease will occur. The disease can further develop into corneal softening and corneal ulcers, and corneal wrinkles and Bitot's spots may also occur. The best food sources of vitamin A are various animal livers, cod liver oil, fish eggs, poultry eggs, etc. The provitamin A contained in vegetables such as carrots, spinach, amaranth, alfalfa, red sweet potatoes, pumpkins, green peppers, etc. can be converted into vitamin A in the body.

2. Foods rich in vitamin B group: a considerable amount of free vitamin B2 is stored in the retina of the eye. If the baby lacks vitamin B group, it will cause photophobia, tearing, burning pain and itching, visual fatigue, and eyelid spasm.

3. Foods rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the components of the lens of the eye. Vitamin C can also effectively inhibit cell oxidation. Lack of vitamin C can easily cause dry eyes in babies.

4. Protein-rich foods: Protein is the main component of cells, and tissue repair and renewal requires constant protein supplementation. Eating more protein can make your baby's eyes bright.

5. Calcium. Calcium is related to the structure of the eyeball. Calcium deficiency can lead to myopia. Children are in the peak growth period, and the amount of calcium they need in their bodies increases relatively. Not paying attention to calcium supplementation will not only affect bone development, but also reduce the elasticity of the developing eyeball wall - the sclera, increase the internal pressure of the lens, and cause the anterior-posterior diameter of the eyeball to lengthen, leading to myopia. Foods rich in calcium mainly include milk and its products, shellfish (shrimp), bone meal, beans and bean products, egg yolks and dark green vegetables.

Why does my baby keep blinking?

1. There is foreign matter

If a tiny foreign body enters a child's eye and remains on the conjunctival surface, it will cause eye discomfort and make the child blink frequently. The foreign body should be removed in time, otherwise it may cause eye diseases such as keratitis or conjunctivitis. It is recommended that parents take their children to the hospital to ask the doctor to remove the foreign body to avoid accidental eye injury.

2. Eyelashes

When a child has inverted eyelashes, the eyelashes will irritate the cornea and cause blinking and tearing. In this case, frequent blinking can be discovered in time as long as parents observe carefully, and the frequent blinking can be alleviated by simply removing the inverted eyelashes.

3. Inflammation

If the child, in addition to frequent blinking, also has redness, itching, increased secretions, and tearing of the eyes, it may be that the eyes are inflamed, and the child should be taken to the doctor for symptomatic treatment.

4. Lack of nutrients

If a child is picky about food for a long time, it may lead to a lack of certain nutrients in the body, especially a lack of vitamins and trace elements, which can cause increased neuromuscular emergency response and lead to neurological dysfunction, and then symptoms of frequent blinking.

5. Eye fatigue

Nowadays, many children use electronic products such as computers and mobile phones. Long-term use can easily cause eye fatigue, dry eyes, itchy eyes, burning sensation in the eyes, blurred vision, decreased vision, eye pain, orbital pain, etc. Parents are advised to strictly control the time their children use electronic products and pay attention to eye health, such as looking into the distance frequently and doing eye exercises.
