What are the dangers and embarrassments during childbirth?

The ancients said, "Giving birth is like walking through the gates of hell." With advanced medical technology, what are the dangers of giving birth? What kind of embarrassment will you face during childbirth?

What are the risks during childbirth?

Pregnant women may experience postpartum hemorrhage, uterine rupture, uterine atony, and dystocia leading to cesarean section during childbirth. In order to avoid danger during childbirth, pregnant women should try to reduce unnecessary outings when approaching the due date to avoid excessive fatigue and unexpected trauma. Pay attention to body cleanliness and take a bath frequently, but each bath should not be too long. Ensure adequate sleep and rest to conserve energy. Be prepared for childbirth that may come at any time. Practice auxiliary movements for childbirth in advance to master the essentials.

What are the embarrassments during childbirth?

Embarrassing 1 Male Doctor Delivers Baby

Not only are there male doctors in the obstetrics and gynecology department, but most anesthesiologists are male. No expectant mother is willing to show her naked body to a strange man, let alone show her most embarrassing side. Although I know that the other party is just welcoming the baby for you, it still makes people feel embarrassed and very reluctant.

In fact, doctors focus more on the delivery process and dealing with various situations that may occur during the delivery process. They don't care about the embarrassing things that expectant mothers feel. The reason why there are always one or two male doctors during the delivery process is that compared with female doctors, they are stronger; and they are calmer when dealing with emergencies, which helps the delivery go smoothly.

Embarrassment 2 was stripped naked

During childbirth, expectant mothers are often asked to take off all their clothes, which is embarrassing even when facing a female doctor.

If you don't take off your clothes during childbirth, the doctor will have no way to perform all the operations. Especially for normal childbirth, because the abdomen of the expectant mother needs to be pressurized to help with childbirth, the obstruction of clothes will affect the doctor's choice of the location of pressurization. Expectant mothers should have a correct mentality during childbirth. Exposing yourself is to ensure that the baby can be born smoothly and safely.

Embarrassing 3 shaved pubic hair

During childbirth, the nurse or doctor will shave all your pubic hair, making you feel like your most private part is being "invaded" and you are powerless to stop it!

Shaving pubic hair during childbirth is medically called "perineal skin preparation". Only after removing the pubic hair can the doctor disinfect and suture the perineal wound during normal delivery. In addition, bacteria are easily bred in pubic hair, and the fetus may be infected when passing through the perineum, causing disease. Therefore, shaving pubic hair is beneficial for both the expectant mother and the fetus.

Embarrassing 4: Catheterization

The expectant mother was still enduring the pain of labor, while the nurse was holding a rubber tube and inserting it into her urethra to help her with urine drainage! It was inconvenient to do anything with such a tube inserted, and it hurt even when she turned over. It was really annoying!

Whether it is a natural birth or a caesarean section, doctors insert a catheter into the expectant mother to help her urinate in time. During the delivery process, the expectant mother's bladder is compressed and temporarily loses function; it cannot recover quickly and cannot urinate in time. If the catheter is not inserted, the excess water produced after delivery will damage the health of the expectant mother.

Embarrassing 5 anal examination

Finally you're in the delivery room! Before you have time to be happy, the nurse suddenly spreads your thighs and starts poking your anus! It's so embarrassing, and it repeats every few minutes!

Expectant mothers should not underestimate this action, which is called "anal examination" in medicine. The purpose is to understand the dilation of the cervix to determine the exact time to enter the delivery room. The reason why nurses repeatedly perform anal examinations is to understand the position of the fetus more accurately.

Embarrassing 6 enema

In addition to the urinary catheter, some expectant mothers will also have a tube inserted into their anus. Doctors call this an "enema". Why do you have to endure this torture?

Because of the pressure from the growing fetus, expectant mothers usually have constipation problems. Constipation often causes feces to accumulate in the intestines, which often affects the smooth descent and internal rotation of the fetal head during delivery, thus hindering the progress of the delivery process. Therefore, once delivery is imminent, the doctor will perform enema according to the mother's condition to clear the feces in the intestines and reduce the resistance of the birth canal.

Embarrassing 7: You might vomit

During the birth, the expectant mother pushed hard and suddenly felt nauseous. Before she had time to think about it, she vomited everything she had eaten!

Vomiting is a common phenomenon during childbirth. Almost 90% of expectant mothers have experienced nausea and vomiting. During childbirth, the food in the stomach stops digesting, leading to vomiting. In addition, if the expectant mother chooses painless childbirth or caesarean section, epidural anesthesia will be implemented. Anesthesia causes a drop in blood pressure, resulting in nausea and vomiting. This is also the reason why expectant mothers who have a caesarean section cannot eat 6 to 8 hours before the operation.

Embarrassing 8: You may become incontinent

"Push, push..." The expectant mother listened to the doctor's instructions and pushed hard. Suddenly, after pushing hard, some uninvited guests appeared on the delivery bed - the expectant mother's feces. Oh my God! What could be more embarrassing than this!

During childbirth, especially after an epidural, the sphincter muscles near the anus become paralyzed, and the ability to control stool is weakened. When the baby's head passes through the birth canal, the rectum becomes smooth and the contents inside are pushed out. This is a normal movement of the human body and there is no need for expectant mothers to be embarrassed.

Awkward 9 Trembling involuntarily

"Click... click..." Many expectant mothers' teeth will suddenly make such uncontrolled sounds during childbirth. After a while, the body will also begin to tremble and shake. What's going on?

Nearly 50% of expectant mothers complain of trembling and teeth rattling during childbirth. This phenomenon does not occur because of feeling cold, but the trembling is the result of some incompatible components in the mother's blood. During childbirth, a very small amount of fetal blood will merge into the mother's blood. If there are incompatible components in the mother's and baby's blood, such as the mother's blood type is A and the baby's blood type is B, then the mother is likely to experience trembling, shivering, and chills.

What are the stages of childbirth?

1. First stage of labor

It is also called the cervical dilation period. It starts from the beginning of regular uterine contractions with an interval of 5 to 6 minutes until the cervical opening is fully dilated to 10 cm. This process takes 11 to 12 hours for primiparas and 6 to 8 hours for multiparas.

Cooperation in the first stage of labor:

(1) Eliminate fear and stay calm and optimistic;

(2) Eat on time and get enough nutrition;

(3) Urinate on time, once every 2 to 4 hours, to empty the bladder to avoid hindering the descent of the fetal head;

(4) If the fetal membrane has not ruptured, you can walk around in the delivery room with the doctor’s consent;

(5) You can also do some auxiliary pain-relieving exercises during uterine contractions.

2. Second stage of labor

It is also called the delivery period. It is from the complete dilation of the cervix to the delivery of the fetus. It takes 1 to 2 hours for primiparas, and usually only a few minutes for multiparas, but it can take up to 1 hour.

The peak of labor is coming and the baby is about to be born. The fetal head moves close to the vaginal opening, and the vulva and anus appear to bulge out due to the pressure of the fetal head on the pelvic floor. Soon the fetal head will be visible, moving forward with each contraction, and may slide back a little when the contraction disappears.

When the top of the fetal head is visible, midwives often tell women not to push too hard because if the fetal head is delivered too quickly, the skin of the perineum may tear, so women should relax and take a few seconds to catch their breath. If there is a risk of severe tearing, or if the fetus is in danger, women will have an episiotomy. When the fetal head stretches the vaginal opening, women will feel a tingling sensation, followed by numbness, because when the vaginal tissue is stretched very thin, it blocks the conduction of nerves.

The baby's face is facing down as the head comes out. The midwife may check the umbilical cord to make sure it is not wrapped around the baby's neck (it often does when the head comes out). The baby's head is then turned to one side so that the head is in line with the shoulders. The midwife cleans the baby's nose and mouth and, if necessary, suctions fluid from the baby's airway.

During the next two contractions, the baby's body will slide out of the mother's body, still connected to the umbilical cord, which the midwife will cut. In addition, the midwife will clear the baby's airway again and give oxygen if necessary.

3. Third stage of labor

It is also called the placental delivery period. It is from the delivery of the fetus to the delivery of the placenta, which takes 5 to 15 minutes and should not exceed 30 minutes.

After the fetus is delivered, there will still be uterine contractions to promote the delivery of the placenta, but the contractions at this time are relatively painless. Afterwards, the doctor will clean up the pregnant woman and do local sutures if there is a tear in the vulva.

Precautions during childbirth

Precautions for childbirth include those before, during and after childbirth. Before childbirth, mothers should be prepared to be admitted to the hospital for delivery, including the various items they need to bring when they are admitted to the hospital. If there are clinical signs such as vaginal bleeding or irregular uterine contractions, they should be admitted to the hospital in time for delivery. During the delivery process, if the degree of abdominal pain is not very severe, pregnant women should try to get out of bed and walk back and forth, which will help promote the dilation of the cervical opening and accelerate the progress of labor. Pay attention to emptying the urine in the bladder on time and avoid holding urine to avoid affecting the progress of labor. Do not force too early before the cervical opening is fully opened to avoid cervical edema that affects the progress of labor and even causes cervical lacerations. After delivery, pay attention to vaginal bleeding. If the amount of bleeding is too much, you should inform the medical staff in time. Pay attention to personal hygiene after delivery to prevent obstetric infection.
