What are the symptoms of teething in babies? What are the symptoms of teething in babies?

Teething is an important stage for babies. How can we help babies to get through the teething stage in a healthy way? What are the symptoms before teething? Let's find out what the symptoms are for babies. Parents who have these symptoms should pay more attention to their babies' oral problems.

What are the symptoms of teething in babies?

1. Drooling

When your baby is teething, he or she will drool a lot, just like a tap. You can hear the sound of water coming out of the baby's mouth. Many of the following troubles are caused by excessive drooling.

2. Drool rash

Sensitive skin and excess drool are not a good match, especially when it's constantly rubbing against drool-soaked sheets. Your baby may develop a red, raised rash around his lips and chin. Tie an absorbent towel under his chin or place a diaper under the sheets while he sleeps. Gently wash the drool off your baby's skin with warm water, blot with a towel (don't rub), and apply a gentle moisturizer such as cold-pressed coconut, almond, or safflower oil.

3. Cough

In addition to flowing out of the mouth, excess saliva will also drip into the baby's throat through the "back door", causing vomiting or uncomfortable coughing.

4. Diarrhea

In addition to disturbing the facial skin, excessive saliva can also affect the stomach and intestines. During the period of teething, the baby's stool is loose and accompanied by a slight diaper rash. Once the teeth grow well, this little trouble will automatically disappear.

5. Fever and irritability

The inflammation caused by the hard teeth breaking through the soft tissue can cause fever (38.3). If necessary, you can give your baby paracetamol.

6. Bite

Teething babies want to bite everything they see. Teeth marks on crib rails and the sound of a spoon clicking in their mouth are signs that their gums are sore and need relief. They will also bite your arms, fingers, and even your nipples when feeding. Give them something cool and hard to chew on. The best are cold spoons, popsicles, frozen hard bread, teething rings, etc. My baby's favorite is chicken thigh bones with the small bones removed. Frozen teething biscuits that dissolve in the mouth are also a good choice. However, we don't recommend commercial pain relief products because their exact ingredients are difficult to identify and their safety cannot be guaranteed.

7. Waking up at night

Teething doesn’t rest at night, so neither should teething babies and their parents. Babies who used to sleep well will often wake up at night during the peak of teething, and it will be difficult to return to their pre-teething sleep pattern. You can give your baby paracetamol before bed. If the baby is very fussy, double the dose. If necessary, give it again after 4 hours.

8. Refusing to eat

This is the most individual aspect of teething trouble. Some babies never miss a meal, some babies who are used to breastfeeding will eat more for comfort, and some babies won't even touch the breast. In this case, give your baby cool, pureed foods, such as frozen applesauce. Your baby will like it better if you feed it with a cold spoon.

What to do if your baby has a fever while teething

1. The normal basal body temperature of a baby is 36.9℃~37.5℃. Generally, when the body temperature exceeds the basal body temperature by more than 1℃, it can be considered as a fever. Among them, low fever refers to the body temperature fluctuating around 38℃, and high fever refers to the body temperature above 39℃. Continuous fever for more than two weeks is called long-term fever.

2. If the baby's temperature is below 38.5 degrees, take physical measures to reduce the fever. It is best to give the baby plenty of water. Pay attention to whether the ambient temperature is too high. In the hot summer, the temperature is very high, and the baby's ability to regulate body temperature is poor. When the mother holds the baby, the heat is not easy to dissipate, causing the body temperature to rise. However, this fever usually does not last too long. Put the baby in a cool place, fan it slightly, give the baby some cool fruit juice, or give the baby a warm bath. The body temperature will return to normal after a few hours. In winter, if the indoor temperature is too high and the baby is wrapped too much, the baby's body temperature will also rise.

3. If your baby has a high fever above 38.5 degrees, please ask a doctor immediately to confirm whether it is a viral infection or a bacterial infection. If it is a viral infection, use antiviral drugs such as ribavirin. If it is a bacterial infection, use antibiotics such as cephalosporins. Don't rush to reduce the fever. Fever is only a symptom. The cause of the disease must be found out.

5 major stages of teething that need attention

In fact, before the baby grows the first tooth, the mother can give the baby paste food, such as milk cereal and porridge, according to the baby's development. This can not only increase the baby's nutrition, but also promote the baby's tooth eruption.

Below, according to the different stages of teething, the baby's eating habits and growth and development needs, I will share with you some things to pay attention to during the teething stage of your baby.

2-tooth period

Generally, a pair of deciduous central incisors in the lower jaw will quietly erupt when the baby is 4-8 months old, and the baby will no longer be toothless. During this period, babies like to put any object they can get into their mouths and chew it, which makes people laugh and cry. Sometimes they will imitate adults' actions and chew chopsticks and spoons.

During this period, mothers can try to give their babies some semi-solid food, such as mashed potatoes, egg yolk paste, oatmeal porridge, etc., so that the baby can experience the transition from a watery diet to a paste-like diet. A slightly thicker complementary food can make the baby aware that his food is beginning to change, laying the foundation for adding solid food in the future to let the baby exercise chewing with teeth.

4-tooth period

At about 8 to 12 months, the baby's upper jaw will grow two or more teeth. At this time, the baby's nutritional needs are getting higher and higher. During this period, the mother should give the baby more choices, such as meat paste, minced meat, tomatoes, tofu, etc.

However, if the baby's chewing ability is not good and the baby's digestive function is weak, the blocky food will not be crushed by the teeth and enter the digestive system, and the nutrients will not be easily decomposed and utilized. Therefore, parents should consciously use solid food to guide the baby to practice chewing during this period.

6~8 teeth stage

The upper lateral incisors of the baby will erupt between 9 and 13 months, and the lower lateral incisors will also erupt between 10 and 16 months. During this period, the baby begins to slowly adapt to solid food, and the digestive function of the stomach and intestines gradually matures.

During this period, mothers can give their babies solid food, such as steamed eggs, vegetables, etc.

8~12 teeth

Around 13 to 19 months, your baby will have his first deciduous molars (molars).

After the baby's deciduous molars are formed, the baby's chewing ability is greatly improved. During this period, the baby will be very enthusiastic to use a spoon to put food into his mouth. Even if the food is all over the table, it is worth encouraging the mother, which will also affect the baby's future personality.

During this period, you can reduce the intake of liquid food and increase the intake of solid food, such as soft rice, bread, vegetables, meat slices, etc.

12~20 teeth

During the 16th to 20th month, the baby's 20 deciduous teeth gradually grow in, completing the entire eruption process of the deciduous teeth series. During this period, the baby can not only swallow food by himself, but also his feeding skills are gradually becoming perfect. The mother can give him ordinary slightly softer food, such as rice, noodles, soybeans, etc.
