What to do with constipation in children and what medicine is effective

Constipation is a common problem for young children. Mothers can improve it by using the right medicine and diet. So what should we do if children have constipation? What medicine is effective for children with constipation?

Causes of constipation in children

Stool stays in the large intestine for too long: Constipation is mainly caused by stool staying in the large intestine for too long, causing a large amount of stool to accumulate and turn into a dry and hard state in the descending colon, causing difficulty in defecation.

Children are more likely to have: Many children's digestive tract tissue systems are not yet fully mature and developed, which leads to weak digestion and absorption abilities, and even poor bowel movements.

Imbalanced nutritional intake: If a child's protein intake is too much but not enough carbohydrate intake, it will easily lead to an imbalance in intestinal bacteria, which can further cause the infant's excrement to be more alkaline and dry and hard.

Poor gastrointestinal function: If the child's spleen, stomach and gastrointestinal function are relatively weak or underdeveloped, and the amount of supplementary food consumed is not stable and balanced, it will also cause adverse digestive system conditions.

What medicine should children take for constipation

Phenolphthalein takes effect 6 to 8 hours after taking the medicine. Since a small amount of it is absorbed and circulates in the intestine and liver, its effect can sometimes last for 3 to 4 days. It is suitable for habitual constipation.

Liquid paraffin is taken orally before bedtime and takes effect 6 to 8 hours after taking it. Long-term use can lead to absorption disorders of fat-soluble vitamins, calcium and phosphorus.

Take milk of magnesia orally before bed.

Glycerin suppository is inserted into the anus. It is a mild irritant laxative and bowel movements can be achieved within a few minutes after administration.

Glycerin/sodium chloride (containing sorbitol, glycerin or magnesium sulfate) is first applied to lubricate the anus with a small amount, then slowly inserted into the anus to squeeze the liquid into it, and a bowel movement will occur within a few minutes.

A simple method is to wear rubber gloves at home, dip your little finger in a small amount of liquid paraffin (paraffin oil) or vaseline, and insert it into the anus to relieve constipation.

The enema method uses 1% to 2% soap water or saline, and its temperature is close to room temperature. The enema method is highly irritating and is not used unless there is a special need.

What fruits should children with constipation eat?

Dragon fruit: Whether it is white or red dragon fruit, it has a good laxative effect, and most babies will love its soft taste. You can feed it according to the age of the baby.

Banana: As we all know, bananas have a very good laxative effect and contain many nutrients. If your baby is very young and it is not convenient for him to eat bananas, it is recommended to mash the bananas before feeding them to your baby.

Citrus: Citrus contains a lot of fiber and a variety of nutrients, which can promote gastrointestinal motility and digestion, and can also supplement many vitamins, really killing two birds with one stone. For younger children, in order to facilitate feeding, citrus can be squeezed into juice for drinking.

Pears: Pears have the function of moistening the intestines, promoting bowel movements, lowering blood pressure and promoting diuresis. It should be noted that if pears are stewed with rock sugar, children may suffer from diarrhea if they eat too much, so parents must pay special attention.

Grapefruit: Grapefruit, which has a cute appearance, can not only moisturize the intestines and promote bowel movements, but can also lower blood lipids and blood pressure. However, it sometimes has a slightly bitter taste, which may not be acceptable to every child.

Strawberry: Red strawberries are not only rich in vitamins, but also contain pectin. In addition to relieving dryness and producing moisture, it can also regulate the gastrointestinal tract, lower blood lipids, and prevent constipation.
